Unconditional Love

Padma Gordon

This week in our Rare Mothers in Relationship Workshop we talked about the many different ways you can practice appreciating yourself and your partner.

It can be challenging to keep appreciation alive in a relationship because it's easy to fall into taking one another for granted. As a Rare mother, you are busy managing your family along with all of the complexities of your life and sometimes the efforts your partner makes to help out may feel like interference. If this happens, it’s a signal that you have entered into the non-appreciation zone which can become a trap, damage your relationship and create separation.

One of the most important elements in appreciation is curiosity. Bring your curious mind which is open and soft rather than your projections and judgments. Be aware of what you bring to the table.

Joy for another’s Joy

When your partner mentions something that brings them joy, celebrate their joy with them! Find joy in other people's joy and you will be nourished. This means slowing down and interrupting old habit patterns of fixing or judging.

The truth is that each moment is an opportunity to surrender your agenda and simply be present.

Several of the Rare mothers in our workshop mentioned how they were challenged to tap into unconditional love for themselves and the foundation for loving others is loving yourself.

Practices for Tapping into Unconditional Love

1. Recognizing Your Worthiness

Take a few minutes and write down seven reasons you are worthy. List them out and then read them aloud. Listen to the sound of your own voice and receive these seven reasons one by one. Do this practice for one week and see what changes.

2. Affirmations

Affirmations are a powerful form of positive self-hypnosis. An affirmation I learned many years ago from a very wise man is, “I am a sacred worthy being. I am love and my love is for giving.” Practice this affirmation daily for the best results.

If at first this feels artificial or forced, stick with it and give it a chance. You are a sacred worthy being simply because you are human. Trust the process.

Inspiration

You might also look for sources of inspiration. Find people who are models of unconditional love and listen to what they have to say or read their books, even if it’s just for five minutes at a time. By doing this, you build a reservoir of self-love. When your reservoir is full, you can graciously offer unconditional love to those around you.

Coming up this week: Forgiveness

As a Rare Mother, there may be things that you need to forgive yourself for doing and for not doing and true forgiveness begins with forgiving yourself. Forgiveness serves as a healing salve in a relationship and it opens you to shared intimacy.
