Melissa J. Hogan

Medical Trauma Coach, Author & Rare Mother

Melissa J. Hogan, co-author of “Afraid of the Doctor: Every Parent’s Guide to Preventing and Managing Medical Trauma,” is rare disease mother herself who shifted her career as a health care attorney to being a writer and advocate in the areas of rare disease, special needs parenting, and trauma. She founded a nonprofit that raised millions of dollars for research, earning multiple awards for her work, and served as a consultant to pharmaceutical companies on clinical trial design, an invited speaker at the FDA, NIH, and nonprofit and industry conferences, and an author of peer-reviewed research articles. But her greatest joy is in working with parents and families, supporting them in the challenges of a rare disease diagnosis or other trauma.

In addition to her recent book, Melissa frequently writes and speaks in the areas of trauma, advocacy, and rare disease. She has also taught graduate and law school courses on writing and health care regulatory law and currently serves as a Patient Representative to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and on the Family Advisory Council for Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.

Melissa has also appeared on The Doctors and Inside the NBA, has been featured in national and regional broadcasts and publications, and has appeared on numerous podcasts. Visit afraidofthedoctor.com and melissajhogan.com to learn more.
